During our team building work with client
organizations, we've compiled a collection of barriers that we see creating enormous stress for individuals,
blocking performance in teams, and robbing organizations of productivity.
Each issue, one of these barriers will be
addressed in our newsletter. We'll include some suggestions for breakthrough thinking to give you ideas
for how you might begin busting
through these barriers.

Barrier #12: Today’s Employees Have No
Loyalty
Breakthrough #12: They can be loyal; but they expect more than sitting in a cubicle for thirty years … followed by
a gold watch.
Reliable polls have indicated recently that many of the more experienced
employees in organizations today yearn for the “good old days” when they went to work for a company … and stayed
there.
There is no denying that there are strong downdrafts created by such trends as downsizing,
outplacement, McJobs (short-term and part-time employment), in addition to the high-velocity changes in
information technology.
Let’s face it, Generation Y, the new 20-something
workforce, who occupy your jobs and departments, doesn’t manifest loyalty the way earlier generations did.
Sure, they can be loyal; but they expect more than sitting in a cubicle for thirty years … followed by a gold
watch.
Surveys indicate that even these newer workers, if they had their preference, would stay
where they are - as long as they get the job satisfaction and competitive perks they’re looking
for.
It’s a two-way street today. Gone are the days when employers can have a cavalier
attitude: Hey . . . if you don’t like it here, you can always
leave. There are lots of hungry people out there.
Shifting demographics such as retiring baby boomers, and the exponential explosion of
knowledge-based industries, make retention of your workers a real necessity, especially hot-skilled technology
workers that can be your competitive advantage in a tough economy.
Remember: Younger Workers Will Soon Be the
Majority.
