Beyond Coaching

1.  Core messages I hear loud and clear from this session are:

*   Listen.  Don’t provide solutions.

*   Everything begins with The Conversation.  Make sure they happen.

*   Useful in helping someone cope or get through a tough period.

*   Real life situations vary from person to person.  “One size fits one.”  Realize that each situation should be handled differently.

*   Life is not fair.  Coaching can help deal with the situations, and help turn it around.

*   Listen and don’t judge.  Don’t look for the solution but work at helping and finding coaching opportunities.

*   Start the conversation.  It’s never to little/too short.  Share the responsibility.  Need to shift the culture.  Listen, Listen.

*   We are in transition.  Others are experiencing similar difficulties.

*   The importance to really hear what the employee is saying.  The employee has ownership in the process.

*   Have conversations.  Authentic, real, regular chats.  One size fits one.  No right and wrong, not black and white; need to have more dialogue.  Embrace change.

*   Coaching need not be a tedious pre-scheduled task.  The best coaching is done via informal chats.

*   Employee ownership.  Needs to plan his career, satisfaction’s with coaching from employer, third parties.

*   The employees should be allowed to share the ownership of issues that affect them and listening as well as being honest are key to management success.

*   Employee ownership.  Coach as a facilitator, not a problem solver.

2.  Something I will definitely do as a result of this session is:

*   Use the tools with people.  Seek out coaching from others.

*   Work with my team and utilize the tools to better understand the issues.

*   Re-read the book.  Consider “What motivates you” when meeting with employees.

*   Use the tools when dealing with situations.  The tools should be effective in situations requiring attention.

*   Spend more time coaching my staff.  Seek more coaching.

*   Continue with my management and coaching strategies. I have and now will more probably look for coaching moments.  Walk the talk a lot more.

*   Use tools.  LISTEN, LISTEN.  Don’t jump to conclusions.

*   Review my own contribution as well as theirs, and select tools to be used with situations with other staff.

*   Use tools to open discussion with the employees under my report.

*   I am looking forward to using the tools, and would like to circulate the Beyond Survivor handbook to my staff.  Initiate more chats.

*   Encourage my managers to apply what they’ve learned today and coach their staff more than what they’ve been doing.

*   Find a mentor.  Use different types of coaching.

*   On a more frequent basis, ask employees how things are going, effectively offering opportunities to coach.

*   Bump up frequency of coaching conversations (the informal variety).  Address a coaching challenge I have differently.

3.       In my part of the organization, this program would be (circle one): USEFUL / NOT USEFUL because:

*   USEFUL - It provides tools and techniques that are able to be used easily and quickly.

*   USEFUL – My team is typically entry level staff who could really benefit

*   USEFUL – I manage a large work group.

*   USEFUL – Great information for open and honest communication.

*   USEFUL – This will provide a common base to discuss issues from – and bridge some of the conflicts between technical and business.

*   USEFUL – I have at least one employee that I’m not sure how they see their values as being met.  They keep to themselves.

*   USEFUL – Deal with staff with talent retention issues constantly.  Have a variety of staff at different ages and career points which different tools would fit.

*   USEFUL – Feedback from our staff is that we are not good coaches and this is something the staff is looking for and needs.

*   USEFUL – IS group needs to move further towards the New Employer/Employee Relationship.

*   USEFUL – Coaching/mentoring are key to our ongoing success and the development or restoration of TRUST.

*   USEFUL – There is a powerful message here for the employees.  The main problem as I see it is to convey the message to them clearly – by preference.  I would have them all attend a version of this session.

4.  My comments on the session overall:

*   Practical and useful.

*   Good.  Interesting.  Fun.

*   Overall this is a great course.

*   Very good I learned a lot about my colleagues in a friendly and comfortable environment.

*   Thanks.

*   Good stuff – in some cases, review for me.  But it puts it together in a neat package.

*   Very good.

*   Excellent, original tools.

*   Feel very comfortable contacting the facilitator if need guidance or coaching!!

*   I particularly like the numerous activities which help the learning process.  Plus being able to go outside.  Overall, it was a very productive session, not just the education part, but also the “bonding” part that just happened as a consequence.
