Beyond Survivor


 

Amgen is a leading human therapeutics company in the biotechnology industry. For more than 25 years, the company has tapped the power of scientific discovery and innovation to advance the practice of medicine. 

Amgen pioneered the development of novel products based on advances in recombinant DNA and molecular biology and launched the biotechnology industry’s first blockbuster medicines. Today, as a Fortune   500 company serving millions of patients, Amgen continues to be an entrepreneurial, science-driven enterprise dedicated to helping people fight serious illness.

Their challenge for us was to create a two-hour team building event for their annual conference that would deliver some tools for managing change.  We also needed to ensure that the session would energize over 80 GenY scientific professionals.

When participants were asked for some specific things they would be as a result of this session, they said:

Survivor card:  3 minutes/3 weeks.  (Note:  this refers to an action planning process where we challenged participants to think about what they could do to add more satisfaction into their work lives.  We suggested that if they spent 3 minutes every day , for three weeks, focussing on actions within their control, they would begin to notice a gradual shift in their workplace motivation.)  

 


Seriously think about my work performance, environment and expectations. Improve communication & feedback with staff and colleagues. Examine other aspects of work satisfaction.    


 

Review my priorities and be more conscious of work issues. Try to work on Least Fulfilled issue. Be conscious of what motivates me and be more aware of my important goals. 


 

Post my Survivor Card in my cubicle to remind me what is my top satisfier & ensure that my career satisfies this. Believe in me. Be confident in my objective. 


 

To look at my Card every day & try to get what I want in terms of work satisfaction. Focus on all the positives of my job.  


 

Think about this activity to help me to work productively during all the changes from the company. Focus on the characteristics I deem most important and maximize my strengths there.  


 

Put card on desk at home. Focus on the things that are satisfying in my job and build to make the least happen. Place more emphasis on working with a mentor. 


Other comments:

Excellent session. Really good process to help me to identify what I want with my job. A good way to promote cross-functional discussion. Worthwhile.  


 

Very well organized.   Went well, light hearted approach to a tough issue.   Very informative and unique method. Appropriate for our current environment.
