You CAN Go Home Again!
Work. Play. It’s getting so that you
can’t tell them apart anymore. It’s great when you enjoy your work so much that it feels like
play. But what happens when even play starts to feel like
work.
The primary reason for this is
job stress that goes home with
you. It also arises when there is no outer boundary on work
hours - what we used to admire as workaholic behaviour. It can
lead to marital breakdown, substance abuse, anxiety, and chaos.
All of which travels back down the pipeline from home to the office.
As team leader or organization, if
you manage as though your employees' lives outside of work are unimportant, you manage
wrong. The workaholic is no longer a model employee. Eventually, a private life that suffers will also become a problem in the
workplace. Job pressure rises, productivity and creativity fall
off, absenteeism climbs along with medical and compensation costs.
Retention is at risk.
You get the picture: there can be no
first-rate workplace productivity without the realization that there is a “whole” person with a real life
outside of work . . . and less and less time to do more and more.
What do you do?
You put quality of life
first. Offer employees a new incentive for working smarter and
enjoying work more.
